It’s not true. I am hating the process to get Kamui Whisky K.K. licensed to distill legally in Japan. It’s death by a thousand cuts. All the bureaucracy, all the nonsensical rules that are the occasional bane for a foreigner living in Japan, have come out in full during this process.
I feel a sense of guilt for laughing inwardly; a work assignment that’s been dragging suddenly feels altogether manageable. From all of your future patrons, a collective thank you for moving mountains. Excellent piece and anxious for the next!
This was a fascinating read — albeit vicariously exasperating. So glad to hear that you’re sticking with it, despite the genuinely absurd challenges. Know that all of us whisky lovers are rooting for you and are excited to hear about the next step!
"But no, even going 10 steps across a public road, means we’ve left the land that was granted the distillation license. Not possible."
I'm curious about this. Let's say you did get the license for an additional facility. Would it then be possible? If it's possible, would the 蔵出し税 apply when it leaves THAT facility, or the first one?
It's particularly intriguing because as far as I know, Suntory doesn't have a distillation license for their Ohmi Aging Cellar. Do they just pay the tax on the unaged whisky when it leaves Hakushu or Yamazaki, and eat the discount they would have gotten from the angel's share?
